Today’s blog is written by PPI-CY participant turned coach Sophia about her new role as a coach and her excitement for the upcoming season.
Hi! My name is Sophia and I am 19 years old and have been with PeacePlayers-Cyprus for four years. I started off as a participant then went on to join the Lead4Peace program. In the summer I attended our annual summer camp as a coach for the first time and I loved it! It was an incredible experience and I learned so much from my fellow coaches and from the PPI kids at the camp.
This year PPI is giving me the opportunity to coach a group of girls in Engomi alongside my fellow PeacePlayer and one of my best friends “Mush.” We had our first week of practice this week and I’m so pumped! I can’t wait to teach these girls everything I learned from PPI and my coach and all the different skills on and off the court.
The first week of practice with the girls was good although they still need some time to get used to Mush and I as their new coaches. They had the same PPI coach for the last year, Coach Stephanie, so we have some big shoes to fill. I’m not quite worried about that though. Mush and I make a great team with everything we have learned during our journey as PeacePlayers and everything we have experienced. I think we will be just fine. I’m hoping to teach our group of girls everything my coach taught me through the game like respect, self-confidence, optimism and much more as well as how to show some basketball skills on the court .
I really want the new generation of PPI kids to have the experience I did with PeacePlayers. I hope they get to learn everything we learned because they are the future of PeacePlayers and the next generation of leaders . We all say PPI is our second family, our home away from home and I’m hoping to give back to PeacePlayers this and show them I’m so grateful for this opportunity and happy to be part of the PPI team . #ITSCOOLTOBEAPEACEPLAYER
p.s. I’ll try not to give out to many strikes
