Sureyya is a gender expert who is actively involved in woman’s rights movements in both Cyprus and Turkey. She has a BA in Radio, Television and Cinema from Gazi University and an MSc in Women’s Studies from Ankara University. Prior to joining PeacePlayers, she was working as the National Family Strengthening Advisor and Project Coordinator at the SOS Children’s Village – Northern Cyprus. She also worked in the Office of the President H.E.Mr.Mehmet Ali Talat as the appointed Gender Officer. Her main responsibility was to develop proposals on gender equality within the framework of the United Nations Resolution 1325 and national policies to promote gender equality within the country. She has participated several international conferences on gender equality & gender mainstreaming; attended various trainings on Advocacy, Facilitating Skills, Project Cycle Management, Conflict Resolution and Peace Building. As a board member of the Cyprus Women’s Solidarity Council, she produced and presented a TV programme between March 2009 & June 2009 for the National TV Channel (BRTK) called “Difference and Awareness” which was aimed to raise awareness on social policies and particularly on gender issues. She has won a secondary prize in an article contest held by the Hurriyet Newspaper in 2004 with a piece named “The EU is Bringing another Path for Women to Pave a New Way for their Life in Turkey”. Sureyya is married and has a 4 year old son named Umut Ada (Island of Hope), whom name was given in the belief of bringing new hopes to our island.
