Thembinkosi, known as “Mtu,” was born and raised in Lamontville, where he did all his schooling and completed his matric. Mtu graduated at Natal Technikon, now called the Durban University of Technology, completing a National Diploma in Management. He joined the basketball team at Natal Technikon in 1997 and led them to two championships as a starting point guard. He also led the team to win the Campus Basketball League in 2000. The following year he was selected for the South African Student Sport Union (SASSU) basketball team and awarded the Sportsman of the Year at Natal Technikon (1998). In 1999 he captained the South Africa students’ team that won the gold medal at the CUCSA games in Zambia. He has competed against countries like Korea, Russia, Canada, China and the Philippines. Previously, Mtu worked for LoveLife, one of the biggest HIV prevention Campaigns in South Africa. He is now a Program Director and oversees the areas of Lamontville and Umbumbulu. Mtu also chairs the Basketball Committee.
