Today’s story comes from Nicole Breslin, a sessional coach with PeacePlayers – Northern Ireland for 5 years.
I was recently given the opportunity to present at the inaugural Amman Peace Talks with the theme “Peace building: up close and personal”. The event was hosted by Generations for Peace (GFP) in Amman, Jordan, a leading global non-profit organisation that aims to empower youth for the purpose of inducing sustainable change in communities experiencing conflict. They are currently ranked #29 in the ‘Top 500 NGOs in the World’ and have positively impacted peace building organisations in 50 countries world-wide. I left Belfast on Saturday 19th October and arrived at my hotel in Amman at 1am early the following morning. At 10am a driver from GFP was waiting to take myself and a few of my fellow speakers to the GFP Headquarters where the event would be taking place later that evening. This is when I was formally introduced to the other speakers.
Before the event we were asked to prepare a 5 minute ‘Ted Talk-like’ presentation that told our story and had an inspirational key message. I decided to go with a theme that has stood out to me over my past 3 years as a PeacePlayers coach, a theme which is also one of our key values as an organisation: Authenticity. After a couple of weeks of collaborating with GFP Media and Engagement Specialists, I had a piece that I believed could hold its own in the events line-up. My fellow speakers were incredible individuals from Africa, North America, Syria and Jordan, each of whom had an inspiring story of their own to tell. The event had 300 audience members which included HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan, Ambassador Vincent O’Neill of the Embassy of Ireland, Jordan and previous Arab Idol winner, Yacoub Shaheen.
The next day all of the guest speakers had the privilege of visiting the historical city of Petra in Southern Jordan. While we were there we were given a group tour and had the opportunity to learn more about each-others backgrounds.
The experience as a whole was truly inspirational while also being one of the toughest personal challenges I have ever faced. I wouldn’t have changed it for the world!
